Both Sony and Ericsson believe mobile TV use by consumers is in the immediate future
Ericsson officials reported that Ericsson and Sony are working together to help promote mobile and broadband TV. According to Per Nordlove, Ericsson’s direct of product strategy and portfolio management, the two companies are hoping to create software that will help link their products through wireless networks. Although the company already has the joint business Sony Ericsson aimed at creating mobile phones, there is room for a joint venture designed for mobile TV exploitation.
Eric Siereveld, Sony’s director of Professional Solutions said “It plays to the strength of both companies.”
Mobile television will be something for mobile phone users worldwide in 2008, according to Nordlove. The companies believe one third of the world’s mobile phone users will be watching some form of TV broadcasts via their mobile phone. If one third of the world’s mobile phone users do watch mobile TV broadcast, a new and lucrative market will be established for phone and service providers.
Both Sony and Ericsson recently demonstrated a number of different technologies that they both think will soon become widely used, including a service in which photos and videos can be painlessly sent between a TV and a mobile phone. The new technology could launch sometime in the second half of 2007.
