Intel and TSMC Say 32nm Development ‘In Good Shape’

With the main buzz about the next semiconductor process shift being to 45nm, Intel and TSMC are already gearing up the development of the 32nm node, reports DigiTimes. The article quotes Intel’s director of technology strategy Paolo A. Gargini as saying that its development of the 32nm process is “in good shape.”

December’s debut AMD’s 65nm dual-core Athlons

MD will ship its 65nm dual-core Athlon 64 X2 processors a week on Tuesday, it has been claimed. If correct, the 5 December debut apparently marks an acceleration of AMD’s anticipated 65nm roll-out schedule.AMD has been expected for some time to be preparing to ship the 65nm X2s, codenamed ‘Brisbane’, next month, with reports claiming such a move stretching back to May this year. Later reports had the chips’ debut down as Q1 2007, but later in the year, the launch moved forward, to December.

Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 quad-core CPU

So here we are, not quite four months since Intel launched its Core 2 Duo processor and we’re already moving up yet another level. Intel will today officially announce ‘Kentsfield’, aka the four-core Core 2 Extreme QX6700. Some may claim it isn’t a true quad-core CPU as Intel has fitted two Core 2 Duo CPUs together in a single package, but it is a first step to what the future holds…

Dell says Vista needs double bubble memory boost

THE CEO of Dell reckons Microsoft Vista needs 2GB of memory but that isn’t going to stop it selling like hot cakes.Kevin Rollins, quoted on the Seattle Post Intelligencer, said that while Microsoft reckons 1GB of memory is OK, 2GB is better.
The memory companies and the graphics card vendors must be sitting in their offices using their imagination to visualise the racks of coins they believe Microsoft’s Vista will bring them.

AMD and ATI fuse

AMD has completed its purchase of ATI. It spent $4.3bn in cash and 58m AMD shares on the graphics chip company, taking on $2.5bn in debt to help pay for it all. Farewell, the ATI, retained only as a product brand.
And with acquisition comes integration. AMD said it plans to announce a number of platforms next year that will combine its processor technology with ATI’s GPU designs, as Intel Centrino-like platforms.
