Apple introduces iTunes for the Macintosh, a program that converts audio CDs into compressed digital audio files, organizes digital music collections, and plays Internet radio.
    October 23, 2001
Apple unexpectedly announces the first iPod (codename Dulcimer) at a price of $399. Unlike most (but not all) competing digital audio players available at the time, Apple relies on a hard disk for storage instead of flash memory or interchangeable CD-ROMs, and uniquely focuses on promoting the small size, power, and ease of use of its device. The first iPod has a 5 GB storage capacity - enough for over 1,000 songs - and works only on Macs, using iTunes as a music organization and CD-to-iPod conversion tool. Did Apple release iTunes with the iPod in mind? According to an official Apple timeline, development of the iPod began only six months earlier.November 10, 2001
Apple ships the first iPod.Mid-November, 2001
Third-party developers begin to write workaround software that lets the iPod work with PCs. While first demo versions of the software are available in January of 2002, final versions won’t emerge until June of 2002.December 31, 2001
By the end of 2001, Apple has sold a total of 125,000 iPods.

LG gives us some more chocolate to enjoy

Christina Aguilera may love singing about LG Chocolate phones on TV, but there looks to be more chocolate lovin’ on the way from LG. According to Crave at CNET.co.uk, LG’s new LG UP3Flat is the latest device to take on the “Chocolate” name and will go up against the likes of Apple’s popular iPod Shuffle.

Microsoft may pay Zune tax twice

December 15th, 2006 by M0tik

ms_zune_sm.jpg
Microsoft’s private deal with Universal Music to pay the record label a voluntary royalty of $1 for every Zune player it sells has raised eyebrows across both the technology and music industries. But it might not be the last payment Redmond owes from Zune, we’ve discovered.

Recently, Steve Gordon, entertainment attorney and Reg music columnist, took a skeptical look at where Universal’s Zune dollar might end up. He reminded us of a little known US tax, which harks back to the “Home Taping Is Killing Music” era. Under the Audio Home Recording Act of 1982, recording devices carry a small royalty which is then divvied up between the performing artists involved. The royalty is administered by the Alliance of Artists and Recording Companies, AARC.

Creative’s CEO offering up his Lexus to celebrate 25 years

December 4th, 2006 by M0tik

If there’s two things we like here at Engadget, it’s charities and outspoken CEOs. Thanks to Creative accomplishing both in one fell swoop, the company will not only throw a month long celebration in Singapore, but give lucky donors a chance to roll away in Sim Wong Hoo’s whip.

Aigo’s F006A MP3 Player

November 29th, 2006 by M0tik

Foo6a Aigo’s F006A MP3 Player resembles the 1st gen shuffle, but unlike the shuffle, it’s colored black and it has an ornamental design running over it. The F006A plays MP3 and WMA files, has a voice recording function and a 5 mode equalizer. Nothing ground breaking but we think its cool because it’s pretty. And unfortunately, chances are you won’t be able to find this MP3 Player anywhere but in Asia, so don’t get your heart set on it.

November 14th, 2006 by M0tik

Microsoft’s first generation Zune music player is launching today at a price of $249. The 30GB, WiFi enabled player will be made available in over 30,000 retail locations and is sure to be a hot item for Christmas wish lists. But just as the Zune is hitting store shelves, the boys over in Redmond are already working on updates to the player according to Engadget. In an interview with Bloomberg, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer stated that a firmware update will be made available for the Zune in the future that will enable wireless sharing of user-created video content. The Zune currently enables wireless music sharing on a 3×3 basis (three plays for three days with the option to purchase the tracks).

Ballmer also hinted that a Zune with integrated phone capabilities would also be released down the road. No other details were provided, but rest assured that Microsoft will be going head to head with the long-rumored iPhone.
